Why BitterBlock®?
Lithium button cells are small, powerful – and can be dangerous in the wrong hands. If swallowed by children, they can cause severe injuries within a very short time, in the worst case even life-threatening.
The solution: BitterBlock® – an extremely bitter but completely harmless coating made from denatonium benzoate. Applied as an ultra-thin layer on our batteries, it produces an intense, unpleasant taste if it comes into contact with the mouth. This is designed to make children immediately spit the battery out.

BitterBlock® is an important element in a multi-level protection system that helps keep children safe from the dangers of lithium button cells. The bitter coating works alongside other established safety measures such as child-resistant packaging and clearly visible warning labels.
Our safety concept at a glance:
- Bitter coating: The extremely bitter taste triggers a rejection reflex – children quickly spit the battery out.
- Child-resistant packaging: Special blister packs that can only be opened with scissors.

What You Can Do – 3 Simple Safety Steps
- Store batteries safely
- Always keep them out of reach of children and pets.
- Ideally store them in locked cupboards or containers.
- Secure devices
- Check if the battery compartment has a child-resistant lock.
- If not: additionally secure it (e.g., with tape).
- Dispose of used batteries safely
- Cover both terminals with tape.
- Collect them in a closed container.
- Take them to an appropriate collection point (e.g., in-store recycling boxes).
